“To whom much has been given, from him much is rightfully expected, and a heavy burden of responsibility rests upon the man of means to justify by his actions the social conditions which have rendered it possible for him or his fore fathers to accumulate and to keep the property he enjoys. He is not to be excused if he does not render full measure of service to the State and to the community at large. There are many ways in which this service can be rendered, in art, in literature, in philanthropy, as a statesman, as a solider, but in some way he is in honor bound to render it, so that benefit may accrue to his brethren who have been less favored by fortune than he has been”.
Theodore Roosevelt The Strenuous Life
Our belief is that every life has equal value and we are bound to render service to those less favored by fortune. Autism Spectrum Disorders Aid is a global not-for-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness and bringing the proven benefits of creative play therapies to the disadvantaged, especially children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
We follow guiding principles, which help define our approach to our philanthropic work, and employ an outstanding leadership team to direct our strategies and efforts.
Since founding ASD Aid has grown into the global focus point for Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOLs) who are dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in our community. Many of us have witnessed the power of LEGO play to help children with Autism Spectrum Disorders communicate and grow.
Our main activities are;
- Providing support and resources to grass root organizations
- Establishing LEGO play groups for disadvantaged children
- Funding research into LEGO based therapies
It is our hope that increased awareness and understanding of ASD within the community will lead to earlier diagnosis and more effective treatments, helping to reduce the impact Autism Spectrum Disorders have on children and their families
Our Guiding Principles
The motto of the LEGO group is “det bedste er ikke for godt” (only the best is good enough) and the members of ASD Aid take have stepped forward to help the children impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorders get the best care.
The principles below reflect ASD Aids beliefs about the role of philanthropy and the impact we want this foundation to have. The principles guide what we do, why we do it, and how we do it.
While many of them are fundamental to the way we operate, we will remain open to amending them as we grow and learn more about our work.
#1: We are a community organization driven by the interests and passions of Adult Fans of LEGO.
#2: Our service and philanthropy plays an important but limited role. We fund and shape globally but rely on others to act and implement locally.
#3: Creativity supported by science has great potential to improve the daily lives around the world.
#4: We advocate—vigorously but responsibly—in our areas of focus.
#5: We must be humble and mindful in our actions and words. We seek and heed the counsel of expets.
#6: We treat the ultimate beneficiaries of our work as valued partners and we treat them with respect.
#7: We demand ethical behavior of ourselves and treat each other as valued colleagues.
#8: We expect and make room for growth and change
